Loss of data on messaging services or social media gives some subscribers stress.

WhatsApp has tried in the recent past to upgrade and add new exciting items including that of backing up data on Google Drive.

In the event of transferring content from one WhatsApp account of an old phone to another mobile phone, data loss by accidental wiping or a lost phone, this feature, which is currently only available on Android-based phones, will make these processes easier for the user.

Getting the app

The acquisition of the feature is quite easy; just log on to the WhatsApp website, download the APK file and install it, though the Facebook-owned app is said to have started releasing the updated version of WhatsApp to reach the clients through a programupdate. This feature was in version 2.12.306 of WhatsApp, which, not until recently, was on the firm’s website when Play Store had version 2.12.304. The latest APK file found on app’s website that supports the new backupfeature is version 2.12.323, whereas Play Store’s 2.12.317 version of the application that currently online does support the Google Drive backup feature, but only for those using Android 4.0 and above.

While downloading the APK file, users might be forced to alter some security settings to allow the APK file to install. However, it is important to reset the settings to stop installs from non-Google Play Store sites. The resetting of security settings should be done after installation of WhatsApp APK is over.

Using the backup feature

This new WhatsApp version triggers users to synchronize a Google account with the application such that the data is backed up to the Google account. This version of the app alsoexhibits changes such as the “Backup chats” option under “Settings” altered to “Chat backup”. The “Chat backup” option brings the users to a new screen that aids in the creation of a private backup of their pictures, videos, voice messages and their general chat history on Google Drive, unlikethe “Backup chats” in the old version that simply backed up and stored data locally on the device.

For a stress-free experience, these tips will aid in customizing your backup settings:

Just under the “Settings>Chats and calls>Chat Backup” options, there is “Backup to Google Drive” that permits app users to choose the frequency of the auto backups as monthly, weekly, daily or never. Itis advisedhowever that you set the frequency to “Daily” to have a daily data backup in your Google Drive with no fear of losing your data. You can as well choose any frequency of your choice depending on your accessibility to internet connectivity. You can also create a new Google account for backing up your data so as not to clear up the otherwise limited storage space on your officialexisting Google account.

Remember to tap on the “Chat backup” option on your old phone before switching WhatsApp onto a new phone so as to prevent unintended loss of data. This is so because the app backs up the data at 3AM in the morning- even if the backup frequency is set to daily – and not in real time.

Google Drive backup exceptionally prevents data loss in the app by syncing the app with the Google account and not devices that might get stolen or get damaged completely. The Drive Backup also enhances easier and hassle-free transfer of data from your old phone to a new phone.
